Our History

The family run business Galloway Foodservice was established over 30 years ago  in 1982 by Keith & Joan Houliston after they spotted an opportunity travelling around the Dumfries & Galloway selling frozen gateaux, chips and other frozen food.  It soon became apparent there was a gap in the market for not only frozen foods but also good quality fresh meats to the catering industry.  Keith and his wife Joan expanded the business by supplying wholesale fresh meats along with the frozen food range and also opened a high street butchers shop, Galloway Quality Meats. Galloway Foodservice soon became one of the main frozen food wholesalers and catering butchers in the region, supplying hotels, restaurants, cafes and other food outlets throughout Scotland and Northern England & Galloway Quality Meats became a very popular family butchers for locals and visitors alike.

Galloway Foodservice – Fresh Meats

At Galloway we are proud to be stockists of the finest quality beef, lamb and pork from the best producers in the area.  We also have a full range of poultry, wild game and freshly baked pies and dairy produce including cheese, milk and butter amongst others.

Our modern butchery department in Dumfries provides quality fresh meats with full traceability and in 2008 gained EC Cutting Plant Approval (1737) taking our business to another level.

Galloway Foodservice – Frozen Foods

We have one of the largest chilled & frozen food distribution centres in Southern Scotland and a fleet of modern dual purpose temperature controlled vehicles delivering throughout Scotland and Northern England.

Galloway Quality Meats – Our High Street Butchers

At 25 English Street, we offer shoppers in Dumfries a huge range of quality meats and delicatessen style foods.  The retail outlet in Dumfries town centre offers an extensive array of fresh beef, lamb, pork, homemade burgers and sausages, cooked meats, cheese and a wide variety of freshly baked pies.

Over 10 years ago, we moved to the new premises and transformed the former bakers’ shop into a smart, clean and fresh butchers’ shop. The walls were tiled with a burgundy tile giving a classy look and a lengthy refrigerated display cabinet provides the stage for a vast array of freshly cut product.

Our Meat & Bakery

All of our meat is sourced from the UK through top quality suppliers with whom we have worked with for many years.

We make all of our own burgers and sausages, haggis and puddings within our specially designed processing department, using only the finest of ingredients and to our own delicious recipes.

We also have a dedicated bakery department where we produce freshly baked pies and sausage rolls daily.

Meet the Team

Our customer service is yet another attribute we’re dearly proud of, brought to you by our super-friendly and obliging staff.  Melissa, the founders’ daughter is now a Partner in the family business and she’s often found helping out in the shop when an extra pair of hands is required.

Behind the counter Salina, Angela, Tracy, Bobby and Jason look after our customers, with those last three amassing 45 years service amongst them. Butchery Manager Tom Steele is in charge of all our buying and supplies for both our retail butchers shop and our wholesale meat side of the business, whilst Laura Straiton is head of buying and manages our frozen food division. In total we have 25 members of staff running the wholesale and retail business’ many of whom have been with the company since it started.
